Kicked Outta the Botanic Garden: When Horticulture Misses the Mark On Rare and Interesting Plants

Though Joey Santore has himself been kicked out of a botanic garden or two, the title of this presentation refers more to plants that have been kicked out of botanic gardens because they are not thought to be "showy" or "attractive" enough to warrant display to the public. Join us for a lively presentation that challenges many conventional aspects of modern horticulture and how they are rooted in Spanish colonial and European Victorian gardening traditions, and how this kind of thinking can negatively impact our expectations of what plants should look like and how we view nature itself. Co-sponsored by Colorado Cactus and Succulent Society and Denver Botanic Gardens.

Price: $35, $25 member

Instructor: Joey Santore

Joey Santore is a former brakeman for the railroad who became a botanist and now travels the world documenting plant life through the lens of a misanthropic blue-collar slob from Chicago. He is the host and producer of the YouTube channel “Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't.” He advocates for native plants and for building a closer relationship with plant life through his many profanity-sprinkled and comedic rants.
